Mathematics is the science of patterns. The mathematician uses abstraction to describe the commonalities in the appearance of things all around us—in nature, buildings, the flight of a bird, the movement of the oceans, the lines of a poem, or the outcome of an election. Mathematics provides the tools to see things at their most basic level, way beneath the surface, and identifies the patterns that allow us to see the similarities that are not evident on simple observation. Mathematics further provides the words and symbols that allow us to describe what we see on a deeper, more abstract level. Ultimately, mathematics allows us to prove, beyond any doubt, that some combinations of patterns cannot occur—the mystery of mathematics.
The mathematics program at Carlow is designed for one-on-one interaction between students and faculty. Students interested in the program are placed in appropriate classes using performance on placement tests, transfer courses, and AP exams. Students in advanced courses benefit from individual attention from professors because of the small class size, an average of under 10 students per class.
An undergraduate degree in mathematics prepares you to work in many fields, especially those that require strong analytical and organizational skills, and attention to detail. Most large companies employ persons who are chosen based on these skills as do many government and non-profit agencies. Graduate programs in computation linguistics, statistics, engineering, and law are other career options our graduates pursue.
Carlow’s mathematics major is designed with maximum flexibility in mind so you can expand your career opportunities by completing a minor in an area that interests you or even a second major.
