Focus Areas

Adapted from the Sisters of Mercy’s Critical Concerns, the Social Justice Institutes convenes University stakeholders around research, education, and outreach in an effort to:

  • Ensure that everyone enjoys the same degree of protection from environmental and health hazards and equal access to the decision-making process to have a healthy environment in which to live, learn, and work. (Environment)
  • Advocate for just immigration laws that provide pathways to citizenship, keep families together, and provides access to opportunities for permanent residents. (Immigration)
  • Bring awareness to institutional racism and develop and support strategies designed to dismantle it. (Racism)
  • Prevent intimate partner and violence against children. This also included the support of efforts to end human trafficking and violence in our communities. (Violence Prevention) 
  • Ensure the equal treatment of women. This includes but is not limited to, women’s rights in education, women’s rights in the workplace, pregnancy and parenting discrimination, and violence against women. (Women)
