Dr Mellons Profile

Carlow University President Suzanne Mellon, PhD, has a vision that builds upon the values that have deep roots in the university—and the risk-taking, entrepreneurial spirit of Carlow University’s founders, the Sisters of Mercy.

Under Dr. Mellon’s leadership, today’s Carlow education remains true to those values and that spirit. Carlow is educating students to be career-ready, ethical leaders. Carlow graduates are prepared to stand up to injustice, make a meaningful difference in their communities, and manage change in a challenging, global economy.

Dr. Mellon is deeply committed to the success of Carlow graduates, and to the vitality of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. In 2016, the Pittsburgh Business Times named her one of its most admired CEOs. As she develops strategic new partnerships, she paves the way for a new generation of Carlow students to become an integral part of Pittsburgh’s “Eds, Meds, and Tech” economy, graduating with in-demand degrees and good prospects for great careers.

Dr. Mellon is leading Carlow to the next level of excellence and service by setting in motion a strategic plan and a series of initiatives to position Carlow as a thriving institution and strengthen our impact in the region and beyond.

She is committed to student success, as demonstrated through her championing of the University Commons project, which opened in August 2015. The University Commons is the center of campus life and learning and plays a vital role in educating students and integrating an array of services that support student and faculty learning and collaboration.

By shaping the curriculum to address the workforce needs of today and tomorrow, Dr. Mellon is ensuring that our graduates are prepared to face the challenges and seize the opportunities of an ever-changing global work place.

Prior to her arrival at Carlow, Dr. Mellon served as the executive vice president of St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Throughout her distinguished career, she has held a series of faculty and administrative positions, and her experience as a researcher and scholar has resulted in published articles in national journals and invitations to present to national and international audiences.

A native of Michigan, Dr. Mellon graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan with a BSN, a master's degree from the Ohio State University, and a PhD in philosophy from Wayne State University.

She is a graduate of the Institute for Management and Leadership in Education (MLE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and as president of Carlow, Mellon holds the academic rank of Professor.
