Core Corporate Communication Courses

Major-specific coursework within the Corporate Communication major emphasizes writing, speaking, marketing, leadership, and team-building skills. Examples of required core courses include:

BSM 413: Business Ethics and Social Responsibility

In this course, you'll analyze the role of business in society, covering topics like business within the community, the relationship of business with government, and the regulatory environment. You'll study both market and non-market decisions that have social, political, and ethical ramifications, as well as the effect of values and cultural norms on managerial decision-making.

CM 320: Conflict Management

This course offers a deep dive into the theories, research, principles, and practices of conflict management. You'll discuss the nature and functions of conflict, types and metaphors, conflict analysis and assessment frameworks, patterns of behavior, power influences, and outcomes such as violence and forgiveness. Third-party interventions, including mediation, are also introduced.

CM 370: Communication and Health Care

Designed for any consumer of health care and/or potential employees in the healthcare industry, this course investigates the critical role of communication in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illness and the promotion of wellness. You'll learn about the influence of culturally diverse views of health, illness, and healing on communication patterns, as well as communication strategies for designing, implementing, and evaluating persuasive health campaigns. Coursework also covers the impact of gender, race, class, and age on health communication, the impact of media (news, entertainment, advertising) on health images and awareness, and health advocacy methods to empower individual citizens and communities.

How to Apply

First-year students looking to major in corporate communication must first submit the following materials for application. You can do so when you apply for free online:

  • A completed application form
  • Official high school transcripts (ask your guidance counselor to forward this to Carlow's Admissions Office)
  • SAT or ACT test scores (if applicable)
  • Personal essay and/or recommendation from your secondary school principal, teacher, or guidance counselor. These are optional, but in some instances may be required.
