WASHINGTON, Pa. --- Carlow University men's basketball snapped a
47-game losing streak with a 70-69 win over Washington &
Jefferson College in a nonconference game Wednesday.
The Celtics (1-18) scored 42 points in the second half to pull
ahead of the Presidents (8-7) and hang on for the win after being
down, 31-28, at halftime.
The Presidents took the lead early on in the first half,
maintaining a buffer of 7 to 9 points throughout the half.
Eugene Goodwine (FR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) made a
layup at the end of the first half to put Carlow within striking
distance heading into the second half.
W&J extended its lead to as much as eight points in the
second half before Carlow took the reins.
Sophomore Marcus Millien (Orlando, Fla.)
hit a trey at 10:31 to put the Celtics within one point of the
Presidents. In the next possession, he added a two-point jumper to
give Carlow the advantage.
That was the turning point of the game for the Celtics, as they
did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.
Carlow led, 70-66, with 20 seconds left on the clock. The
Presidents missed two easy buckets and made a three-pointer at the
buzzer, but it was not enough to force overtime as Carlow came away
with the win.
The Presidents out-rebounded the Celtics, 47-28, and Carlow shot
64.7 percent from the free throw line. The Celtics forced 18
W&J turnovers and scored 20 points off the bench. The Celtics
shot 58.62 percent from the field in the second half alone.
Millien was 7 for 10 from the field and led the team with 17
points. Goodwine was 6 for 8 from the field with 14 points, and
several Celtics contributed off the bench.
The last time Carlow won before today was an 88-71 road contest
against Bryant & Stratton College Rochester Nov. 4, 2018.
The Celtics travel to Indiana University East for a 3 p.m. RSC
game Jan. 18. Links to live coverage can be found at https://bit.ly/MBB_1920.
